Light & View – Licht & Aussicht

‘’Architecture is the masterly arrangement of forms in the light…’’

‘’ The sun did not know how beautiful its light was until it was reflected off this building.’’ Louis Kahn (talking about Sydney Opera House by Jørn Utzon)

Louis Kahn (1901-1974)

For the regular illumination in the Kimbell Museum (1972) he designed an object, which reflected the sunlight onto the ceiling.

Toyo Ito (1941)

His U-House (1976) also deals with light. A reduced amount of openings let light into the introverted building. One special  feature is the roof window – a slot in the ceiling, which lets a strip of light wander along the curved wall, as the sun moves.

Le Corbusier changed his idea of light and room as well. When he intended to  simulate outdoor light conditions  in the Villa Savoye (when the inside and outside melt together) by allowing a regular and bright distribution, he did it in a totally different way at La Tourette. In La Tourette (1960) Le Corbusier wanted to  emphasize the individual light sources. One opening was positioned precisely in such a way as to allow monks to read their texts during the mass. Like in Glenn Murcutt’s Accommodation as part of the Boyd Education Centre, he added external shading systems (fixed) to avoid the entering  of sunlight at a steep angle (in summer) but to allow  it to enter at a low angle (in winter).

Tadao Ando (1941)

In Tadao Ando’s Church of Light (1989) the slot in the wall is positioned in such a way that the sunlight wanders over the floor during the mass.

Paul Scheerbart (1863-1915)

Paul Scheerbart writes in ‘’Glas Architektur’’ about light and the use of glass in buildings to let the light in. He has a strong connection to Bruno Taut, who devotes to him his Glass House for the Kölner Werkbundausstellung in 1914.

Juhani Pallasmaa (1936)

Juhani Pallasmaa wrote ‘’The Eyes of the Skin – Architecture and Senses’’.

Juhani Pallasmaa (1936) schrieb „Die Augen der Haut – Architektur und Sinne”.

Jørn Utzon (1918-2008)

In another building Jørn Utzon is also dealing with indirect light – Bagsværd Church (1976)

Sverre Fehn (1924-2009)

Sverre Fehn tried to imitate Scandinavian light with the natural light in Italy at the Nordic Pavilion at the Venice Biennale in 1962.

In Kunsthaus Bregenz, Peter Zumthor succeeded in  generating illumination without shadows (nearly). The light is reflected three times  to be distributed evenly.

Following buildings also play with the regulation of natural light:

  • Johnson Wax Building (1936) by Frank Lloyd Wright
  • Miller House by Eero Saarinen
  • Therme Vals by Peter Zumthor

The Villa Vaucresson (1923) by Le Corbusier deals with light in a special way. Here ‘’Light-Barriers’’ can be interpreted as doors -> ‘’Light-Doors’’.
